LCL or FCL? Build the Comparison Around Your Cargo

The choice between less-than-container load and full-container load should begin with the cargo. An estimated order quantity is useful, but a freight comparison needs the packed dimensions, weight and handling requirements.

Two different arrangements

In LCL shipping, cargo from several shippers shares container space, with consolidation and deconsolidation handled by the logistics provider. FCL uses a container for one shipper’s cargo. Maersk’s overview explains these arrangements and the operational considerations involved.

There is no single volume threshold that settles every shipment. The relevant comparison depends on the route, current quotations and the service scope requested.

Prepare one cargo sheet

  • Number of cartons, crates or pallets.
  • External dimensions and gross weight for each package type.
  • Whether packages may be stacked, and any stacking limit.
  • Commodity description and any special handling information.
  • Collection point, destination and required delivery window.
  • Any restrictions on mixing, storage or handling that the provider must assess.

Compare the complete scope

Request a breakdown covering the services you actually need, including collection, origin handling, main freight, destination handling and onward delivery where applicable. Ask which charges are excluded, how long the quotation remains valid and what assumptions could change the price.

Review the proposed handling steps as well as the quoted amount. Packaging that is suitable for a direct container movement may need further consideration when cargo passes through consolidation facilities.

Separate estimates from commitments

Keep requested dates, indicative schedules and confirmed bookings clearly labelled. Allow the buyer and supplier to review the plan if production completion or cargo measurements change.
